Papilio demoleus research
Title: Probability distribution modeling, economic
impact & potential control of the invasive citrus-feeding
swallowtail butterfly Papilio demoleus from Southeast Asia.
Papilio demoleus , also called the
Chequered, Lime, or Citrus Swallowtail is widely distributed throughout the
tropical and subtropical regions of southern Asia. It is an extremely successful
invader and in recent years has been recorded from the Americas. Its orgin has
been traced to Southeast Asia where the species is known as a pest of
citrus.
The species is currently known from
Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Middle East to India, Nepal, southern China, Taiwan,
and Japan, and south through Malaisia, Indonesia, and New Guinea and
Australia. In the New World it is known from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico
and Jamaica.
Known hosts outside of
Australia include virtually all species and varieties of native
and introduced citrus, Glycosmis pentaphylla, Ruta graveolos,
Aegle marmelos, Murraya koenigii, and Chloroxylon swietenia. These are all Rutaceae.
